For very dry lips, the best balm is usually the least flashy one. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a non-irritating lip balm or moisturizer, and says that if your lips are cracked, a thick ointment like plain petroleum jelly can work better than a thin waxy product.
Look for fragrance-free, flavor-free, and SPF 30+ if you will be outside a lot. If a product burns or stings when you put it on, stop using it. That reaction is a clue that your lips are already irritated and the formula is making things worse. Menthol, camphor, cinnamon flavoring, peppermint oil, and strong fragrance are common reasons a “refreshing” balm keeps the irritation cycle going.
Use balm as a seal, not a cure-all. Wetting your lips, licking them, or applying a thin flavored balm over and over can make dryness worse. A thick bland ointment before bed and a plain SPF balm outside is usually a better two-product system than a drawer full of tingly tubes.
If you want one tube to keep in your pocket, bag, and car, a simple SPF lip balm or plain petrolatum-based balm is the safest place to start.
If the dryness is part of a bigger irritation pattern, the skin barrier guide gives the broader explanation. If sun protection is the confusing part, the U.S. sunscreen guide explains why sunscreen choices can feel strangely limited.
