A cloud outage is what happens when a cloud provider, a region, a zone, or a critical dependency stops behaving normally. AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure all describe regions as geographic areas and zones as isolated parts of those regions, which is why the failure of one piece can have a bigger blast radius than people expect.
The hidden problem is dependency chains. If an app, its database, its identity system, and its payment processor all sit in the same region or depend on the same shared service, one outage can take down everything that looked unrelated from the outside.
That is why resilience work matters. For anything important, the answer is not just “use cloud.” It is “know which parts are single points of failure, and spread the risk across zones or regions where it makes sense.”
