How to Tie a Tie — Two Classic Knots Every Man Should Know

The half-Windsor adds one extra wrap for a wider, symmetrical knot — cross, bring up through the neck loop, wrap behind, cross over the front, pull through. Better for formal occasions and spread collars.
For the four-in-hand, start with the wide end 12 inches lower than the narrow end. For the half-Windsor, start with the wide end 14-16 inches lower since it uses more fabric.
Tighten by holding the narrow end and sliding the knot up. Never tighten by pulling on both ends — it distorts the knot shape.
