Try the exact right bit first, then add grip with a rubber band or use locking pliers if the head is exposed. Lowe’s recommends moving to a screw extractor if the head is too damaged for pliers or a driver to bite.
If that fails, a screw extractor is the next step before drilling the head off. The useful trick is to work slowly and keep the tool square to the screw, because rushing usually makes the damage worse.
If the screw is still partly proud of the surface, pliers are often enough. If it sits flush or below the surface, extractor or drilling methods become more likely.
