The old “five-second rule” is not a safe rule to rely on. CDC says perishable food should not sit at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.
If the floor is dirty, damp, or the food is sticky, the safest move is to throw it out. A wet or soft surface gives bacteria more chance to transfer, and the danger is higher for foods like meat, dairy, eggs, and cut produce than for dry packaged snacks.
The practical rule is simple: if the food is low-risk, dry, and dropped on a clean surface for an instant, you are still making a judgment call, not following a safety standard. If it is perishable, skip the gamble.
Once you start thinking in terms of time, temperature, and moisture, the rule becomes less mystical. The real issue is how long the food spent in the danger zone and whether the surface added contamination.
