For a digital electric meter, read the numbers on the display from left to right. If there is a decimal point or extra digits, your utility may tell you to ignore them, so follow the instructions on your bill or your utility’s meter page.
For an older analog meter, read the dial numbers from left to right. If a hand is between two numbers, most utilities tell you to use the lower number. If a hand sits exactly on a number, you usually check the dial to the right before deciding what to record.
The easiest way to avoid mistakes is to take a clear photo of the meter and compare it with the utility’s example. Some companies also want the meter number along with the reading, especially if you are submitting it yourself.
