How do I unclog a garbage disposal?

Turn off the power first, then figure out whether the problem is a jam in the disposal or a clog in the drain line. If the unit hums, will not spin, or feels stuck, use the manufacturer reset and wrench method to free the mechanism. Never put your hand down there.
