How do I unclog a garbage disposal?
Short answerTurn off the power, clear any jam, then use a plunger if the clog is in the drain line.

Turn off the power first, then figure out whether the problem is a jam in the disposal or a clog in the drain line. If the unit hums, will not spin, or feels stuck, use the manufacturer reset and wrench method to free the mechanism. Never put your hand down there.

If the disposer runs but water still backs up, the clog is probably farther down the line. InSinkErator recommends using a plunger on the sink opening, with enough water in the basin to create suction, then clearing any loosened debris and running cold water and the disposal for a minute or two.

The useful detail people miss is that a disposal problem is often not a disposal problem at all. A jam needs a reset. A backed-up sink needs a drain clog fix. Treat them differently and you usually get to the answer faster.
