How to remove water rings from wood furniture

White water rings on wood furniture mean moisture is trapped in the finish layer (varnish, lacquer, or shellac), not in the wood itself. That’s good news — the stain is on the surface, and you can usually remove it with household items.

The mayonnaise method is the most reliable first try. Dab a spoonful of full-fat mayonnaise (or any oil-based product like petroleum jelly) onto the ring, let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then wipe clean. The oil penetrates the finish and displaces the trapped moisture. Buff gently with a soft cloth.

The heat method works for deeper rings. Use a hair dryer on medium heat, held 6 inches from the surface, moving in circles over the stain. As the finish warms, the moisture trapped beneath it evaporates. Wipe away any condensation immediately, and stop if the finish starts to feel tacky. The Wood Whisperer notes that this works best on newer finishes like polyurethane.

Toothpaste (white paste, not gel) can work for stubborn marks. Apply a small amount, rub gently with a soft cloth in circular motions for about 30 seconds, then wipe off and check the result.

For dark or black marks, the water has penetrated past the finish into the wood itself. Those are harder to fix and may require sanding and refinishing. A good rule of thumb: if the ring is white, start with mayonnaise — it works more often than you’d expect.
