Why does my dryer take so long to dry clothes?

A slow clothes dryer is almost always caused by a restriction in airflow rather than a mechanical failure. For a dryer to function, it must constantly cycle fresh, hot air through the drum to absorb moisture from wet clothes and then push that humid air out through the exhaust vent. If this exhaust path is blocked or restricted, the humid air remains trapped in the drum, leaving your clothes damp even after a long cycle.

The first place to check is your lint screen. A clogged screen reduces airflow and forces the heating element to work harder, which can lead to overheating. Even if you clean the screen before every load, a thin layer of fabric softener residue can build up over time, blocking the fine mesh. You can clean this residue by scrubbing the screen with warm, soapy water and a soft brush.

If the lint screen is clean, the clog is likely deeper in your dryer’s vent duct. Lint regularly bypasses the screen and accumulates inside the flexible ducting that leads to the outside of your home. A clogged vent is not just inefficient; it is also a serious fire hazard. Other possible causes include overloading the machine or a failing heating element. Overloading packs clothes tightly, preventing air from circulating around the fabric.
