What is a brokerage account?
Short answerA brokerage account is an investment account where you buy and sell stocks, bonds, funds, and ETFs through a registered firm.

A brokerage account is an investment account at a registered brokerage firm. You use it to buy and sell things like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs.

The main choice is cash versus margin. In a cash account, you pay the full amount for the purchase. In a margin account, the firm lends you money against the securities in the account, which gives you more buying power but also more risk and interest costs.

Most beginners only need the cash-account version. It is simpler, easier to understand, and less likely to create a problem you did not mean to create.

You can use a brokerage account for long-term investing, short-term parking, or both, but the right choice depends on your goal and your risk tolerance.

If you are just getting started, comparing fees, transfer rules, and account minimums matters more than chasing fancy features.
