Why do laptops get cheaper over time?
Short answerLaptops usually get cheaper because chip design, manufacturing scale, and competition keep lowering the cost of building them.

Laptops get cheaper over time because the cost of making them usually falls faster than the cost of the rest of the economy. Chips get more efficient, factories make more units at once, and rival brands keep pressuring each other on price.

That is why electronics often behave differently from groceries or rent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks consumer prices through the CPI, and it also publishes a separate computers index because computers and related gear do not move like the overall basket of consumer goods. Over long stretches, computing power tends to rise while the sticker price for a similar laptop falls.

Productivity is the other big reason. When a manufacturer can design, assemble, and ship more value with the same labor and materials, the price per unit can drop. Competition helps that process by forcing firms to pass some of the savings through instead of keeping them all as margin.

The catch is that not every part of the laptop gets cheaper. High-end chips, memory, batteries, and global supply shocks can still push prices up. The trend is downward, but it is not a straight line.
