How to match foundation to your skin tone

Most foundation-matching mistakes come from guessing the shade without knowing your undertone first. Surface skin tone can change with sun exposure, but your undertone — the subtle color beneath the surface — stays constant. Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. Blue or purple veins mean cool undertones (pink or red base). Greenish veins mean warm undertones (yellow or golden base). If you can’t clearly decide, you’re likely neutral.

Once you know your undertone, swatch three shades that seem close along your jawline — not your hand or wrist, which are often a different color than your face. Blend each one down onto your neck slightly. The right shade is the one that disappears into your skin without looking ashy (too light or too pink) or orange (too dark or too warm). Step outside or near a window to check — store lighting skews everything. If you’re between two shades, buy both and mix them; skin tone shifts seasonally, and having both gives you year-round coverage instead of a single shade that only works half the year.
