Why does hair frizz?

Hair frizz is primarily caused by a lack of moisture in the hair shaft, which makes it seek out humidity from the surrounding air. The outermost layer of a hair strand is called the cuticle. In healthy, hydrated hair, the overlapping scales of the cuticle lay flat, sealing in moisture and creating a smooth, shiny appearance. When hair becomes dry or damaged, these scales lift, leaving the inner core of the hair vulnerable to environmental moisture.

When dry hair is exposed to humid air, it quickly absorbs water molecules. As the inner cortex of the hair absorbs this water, the hydrogen bonds inside the hair reform, causing the strand to swell and twist. This swelling pushes the cuticle scales outward, resulting in the fuzzy, rough texture we call frizz. Chemically treated, colored, or naturally curly hair is more prone to frizz because its structure is naturally more porous and drier.

To prevent frizz, focus on keeping your hair hydrated and protecting the cuticle from damage. Regular conditioning helps seal the cuticle scales. When drying your hair, avoid aggressive rubbing with a standard terrycloth towel, as this creates friction that damages the cuticle and worsens frizz. Applying a lightweight oil or serum while your hair is still damp can also help lock in hydration.
