When to Book Flights for the Lowest Price

The Goldilocks window — book domestic flights 1-3 months out, international 2-8 months out. Everything else matters less than you think.

Infographic showing the Goldilocks booking window — domestic flights at 39 days sweet spot (23-51 day range), international at 49+ days, cheapest travel days, and cheapest months by season.

The biggest mistake travelers make is thinking there’s one magic day of the week to book flights. There isn’t. What actually matters is booking within the right window.

For domestic flights, the sweet spot is about 39 days before departure, with prices typically lowest between 23 and 51 days out. For international trips, the window opens wider — 2 to 8 months before departure, with fares lowest 49+ days out.

The day you book barely matters. Google Flights found Tuesday was only 1.3% cheaper than Sunday. But the day you fly matters a lot — Monday through Wednesday are about 13% cheaper than weekend flights.

Seasonality varies by route, but the general pattern is consistent: January for winter travel, late April through May for spring, August for summer, and September through October for fall. Track your specific route with price alerts rather than relying on a single magic number — but these windows are a reliable starting point.
