A dehydrated cat often looks tired, eats less, and may have dry gums or eyes that look sunken. One classic check is the skin test: gently lift the skin over the shoulders and let go. In a well-hydrated cat, it should snap back quickly. If it stays tented or slow to return, that can be a warning sign.
Dehydration can happen on its own, but it is also a common side effect of vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease, and other illness. If your cat is not drinking, is vomiting, has diarrhea, or seems weak, do not wait and hope it passes.
If the cat seems off, the safest move is to call a vet sooner rather than later. Cats can get into trouble fast when fluid loss starts adding up.
