Why do cats have whiskers?

Whiskers are highly sensitive sensory organs that help cats navigate and understand their environment. Officially called vibrissae, these thick hairs are rooted deep in the hair follicles, which are packed with nerve endings. This structure allows whiskers to detect even the slightest changes in air currents, vibrations, and physical obstacles. Whiskers function as a specialized radar system that transmits information directly to the cat’s brain.

One of the most important jobs of a cat’s whiskers is helping them judge distance and space. The whiskers on a cat’s face are typically as wide as the cat’s body. By inserting their head into an opening, a cat can immediately tell if their body will fit through the gap without getting stuck. Whiskers also help cats navigate in total darkness, as they can feel nearby walls and objects without needing to see them.

Whiskers are also found above their eyes, on their chin, and even on the backs of their front legs. These leg whiskers, known as carpal whiskers, are particularly useful for hunting. They help the cat detect the movement of prey in their paws, which is helpful because cats have poor close-up vision. Because of their sensitivity, a cat’s whiskers can become overstimulated if they are constantly pushed against objects.
