The AI you hear about most today is machine learning, where a system learns patterns from data instead of following only hand-written rules. Large language models are a sub-branch of that, trained on text to predict and generate language.
AI is not sentient and does not understand the world the way a person does. It is a tool that can be very powerful inside the limits of the task it was trained to do.
