What Is Derinkuyu, the Underground City in Turkey, and How Was It Built?
Short answerDerinkuyu is a multi-level underground settlement in Cappadocia, carved into soft volcanic tuff over time and used as a refuge, storage network, and living space.

Derinkuyu is one of the best-known underground cities in Cappadocia, central Turkey. It was not a single one-time construction. It grew over time as people carved deeper into the region’s soft volcanic tuff and expanded the chambers as needs changed.

The geology mattered. Soft pyroclastic rock is much easier to excavate than hard stone, which made large underground rooms, tunnels, ventilation shafts, wells, storage areas, chapels, and animal spaces possible.

It was also a survival strategy. These underground cities gave people a place to hide, store food, and keep going during periods of invasion or instability. Estimates in the historical literature describe Derinkuyu as capable of sheltering as many as 20,000 people.

So the short version is: Derinkuyu was built because the rock made it possible, and because the people who lived there needed a defensive place to disappear into.

Could a large undiscovered primate like Bigfoot still exist in North America?

It’s extraordinarily unlikely. A breeding population would leave bones, DNA, roadkill, or fossils, and North America has no credible evidence of that.
