What is the Book of Enoch and why do people talk about it?

The Book of Enoch, usually called 1 Enoch, is an ancient Jewish apocalyptic work made up of multiple sections written over time. It was never included in the main Hebrew Bible canon, but it survived in Ethiopic tradition and also left traces in the Dead Sea Scrolls. That combination makes it feel half familiar and half hidden, which is a big reason people keep talking about it.

People talk about it because it sits right on the boundary between scripture, interpretation, and mythology. The book helped shape later thinking about fallen angels, the origin of evil, judgment, and the end of the world. It is also one of the main places readers go when they want to understand where the Watchers and Nephilim traditions got their later form.

There are two other reasons it keeps showing up. First, Jude 14-16 appears to quote or echo it, which gives the text unusual influence even outside canon. Second, the book is not one single story but a collection of sections, so different traditions can point to different parts of it and argue about what should matter most.
