What is the Ganzfeld experiment and does it prove ESP?

The Ganzfeld experiment is the most well-known controlled test for extrasensory perception (ESP) ever designed. It was created in the 1970s as a way to test telepathy under conditions that blocked normal sensory input.

How it works. A participant sits in a quiet room wearing halved ping-pong balls over their eyes with a red light shining on them, while white noise plays through headphones. The effect is mild sensory deprivation — no visual patterns, no distinct sounds. A “sender” in another room looks at a randomly selected target image and tries to mentally transmit it. The participant then describes what they perceive, and later picks from a set of images to identify the target. Pure chance would produce about 25% accuracy (one correct out of four).

The early results looked real. Some early studies reported hit rates around 35%, well above chance. Advocates argued that sensory deprivation made people more receptive to psi signals that the brain normally filters out. The results generated serious academic interest.

The replication problem. When other labs tried to reproduce the results, the hit rates drifted back toward chance. A 2010 meta-analysis of 90 Ganzfeld studies found an overall hit rate of 31.5% — still above chance, but not by much. Critically, studies published after 1990 — when experimental standards tightened — showed no significant effect.

Why it matters for the remote viewing question. The Ganzfeld and Stargate projects have the same pattern: early exciting results that could not survive tighter controls. Both remain textbook examples of why parapsychology has not produced replicable evidence despite decades of effort. That does not rule out new discoveries. It just means, so far, the signal has not held up.
