The story starts long before Edison. In 1802, Humphry Davy connected a battery to charcoal electrodes and created the first electric arc lamp — too bright and short-lived for home use. James Bowman Lindsay built a copper-filament bulb in 1835, and Warren de la Rue used a coiled platinum filament in 1840. Both worked, but copper burned out too fast and platinum was too expensive to mass produce.
British physicist Joseph Swan demonstrated a working carbon-filament bulb in 1878, a year before Edison. He even lit his own house with it. But Swan’s bulb had reliability problems and a short lifespan.
Thomas Edison improved the carbon filament by using a carbonized bamboo fiber that could burn for over 1,200 hours, and he solved the practical problems around wiring, sockets, and power distribution. His bulb was the first that worked reliably enough for ordinary households, which is why his name is the one that stuck — not because he was first, but because he made it work in the real world. Edison and Swan eventually merged their companies into the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company.
