The ability to run long distances is a fundamental part of human evolutionary history. According to the endurance running hypothesis proposed by biologists, early humans evolved specific physical adaptations to chase down prey in hot environments, a technique known as persistence hunting.
Unlike furry quadrupeds that must pant to cool down, humans have millions of sweat glands that allow us to dump heat efficiently while in motion. We also possess unique structural adaptations. Our large gluteus maximus muscles stabilize the trunk when running, but are barely active during walking. The nuchal ligament in the neck prevents the head from bobbing, while long, springy Achilles tendons store and release energy with every stride.
These features developed millions of years ago, enabling early hominids to run down fast mammals like antelopes until the animals collapsed from heat exhaustion. For modern endurance pursuits, equipping yourself with supportive running shoes can help protect the joints and bones that evolved to carry our ancestors across the savanna.
