The sky looks blue because gases and particles in Earth’s atmosphere scatter sunlight in all directions, and blue light is scattered more than red light.
White sunlight contains every visible color. The shorter blue wavelengths bounce around the atmosphere more readily, so blue light comes to your eyes from every direction across the sky. Near sunrise and sunset, sunlight passes through more atmosphere, so more blue gets scattered away before it reaches you and the sky shifts toward red or orange.
The important detail is that the sky is not blue because it reflects the ocean or because the air itself is painted blue. It is blue because the air keeps redirecting the bluer parts of sunlight toward your eyes while the longer red wavelengths pass through more easily. The same scattering is why the horizon often looks paler: by the time light gets there, it has crossed more air and been scattered many times.
