How do Flock cameras work?

Flock says its LPR cameras capture a vehicle as it enters and exits the frame, taking somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 images in a single pass. Those images are then processed by software that turns the plate and vehicle details into searchable data.

Users can search by things like plate number, vehicle color, vehicle type, body style, state, and a time window. Flock’s FAQ says the system is set up to make it easy to pull footage for a specific incident and then share it with the relevant parties.

By default, Flock says the data is stored in the cloud and deleted after 7 days unless local law requires a different retention period. In other words, the basic workflow is: camera sees car, software indexes car, authorized user searches later.

The company also says the cameras are solar-powered and LTE-connected, which is part of why they can be deployed in places that do not have existing wired infrastructure.
