On most Android phones, automatic backup is built into Google backup settings. Open Settings, tap Google, then Backup or All services > Backup, and turn backup on.
Once it is enabled, Android can back up things like app data, call history, contacts, device settings, SMS messages, and photos and videos, depending on your phone and account settings. Google says the first backup can take up to 24 hours.
If you have more than one Google account, make sure you are backing up to the account you actually use. That matters when you buy a new phone or reset the old one.
For photos, check Google Photos too. That app has its own backup switch, so a phone backup is not always the same thing as photo backup.
The short version: turn on backup once, verify the right account, and then test the restore path before you really need it.
A reliable phone charging cable is a small investment that makes this easier: phone charging cable.
