A Wi-Fi router is the device that takes the internet connection from your ISP and turns it into the wireless signal your devices use. Choosing one well matters more than people expect, because most “the Wi-Fi is slow” problems are actually router problems, not ISP problems.

For a single-floor home under 1,500 square feet with the router in a central location, a single Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E router is the right choice. For everything else — multi-story homes, long single-story homes, homes with interior brick or concrete walls, homes where the router must be in an inconvenient location — mesh is worth the upgrade. The mesh approach works because each access point connects back to the router (typically via dedicated wireless backhaul in good systems), so the coverage is uniform instead of degrading with distance from a single point.
Security and configuration:
- Turn on WPA3 encryption if your devices support it, otherwise WPA2-AES.
- Change the default admin password on the router itself.
- Keep the firmware updated — most modern routers do this automatically.
- Use a guest network for visitors and IoT devices so they can’t reach your main devices.
