The next total solar eclipse happens on August 12, 2026. The path of totality — where the Moon completely blocks the Sun — crosses the North Atlantic, touching Greenland, western Iceland, and then sweeping across northern Spain and the Balearic Islands before ending near Ibiza. In the United States, a partial eclipse will be visible from the Northeast, with about 50% to 80% coverage depending on location.
Before that, an annular solar eclipse (where the Moon covers the center of the Sun, leaving a visible “ring of fire”) will occur on February 17, 2026. It will be visible in Antarctica, with partial phases visible from parts of southern Africa and South America.
After August 2026, the next total solar eclipse visible from a large land area will be on August 2, 2027, crossing North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia — including Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. That eclipse offers over 6 minutes of totality in some locations, nearly three times longer than the 2026 eclipse’s maximum of about 2 minutes. The next total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States won’t happen until March 30, 2033 (Alaska) and August 23, 2044 (lower 48).
