The most common hidden culprit is credit utilization—the percentage of your available credit you’re using. Even if you pay your balance in full every month, if your credit card company reports your balance to the bureaus mid-cycle when it’s high (say, 50% of your limit), your score can drop 10–30 points temporarily. The fix is simple: it rebounds when the next low-balance report lands.
Other sneaky triggers: closing an old credit card (even one you paid off) shortens your average account age, which can ding your score. A hard inquiry from applying for a new card, loan, or even a phone plan can shave a few points off for up to a year. And sometimes it’s not you at all—a reporting error or identity theft that opened an account in your name can silently drag your score down.
Pull your full credit report from all three bureaus (it’s free once a year) and scan for accounts you don’t recognize, balances that don’t match your records, or inquiries you didn’t initiate. If everything checks out, a small unexplained dip is usually just normal score fluctuation.
