How do I choose a dog leash?

🐾 Pets · updated 6d ago · 3 min read
Short answerFor most dogs, a lightweight 6-foot leash is the safest default; bigger or less-trained dogs need a wider, sturdier leash with a handle that does not shred your hand.

The leash should match the dog in front of you, not the fantasy version in your head. AKC says small dogs can use a narrow, lightweight leash, while bigger dogs or dogs that are still learning leash manners usually need something thicker, wider, and more comfortable in the hand.

For most everyday walking, a 6-foot leash is the cleanest default. It gives the dog enough room to move without turning every walk into a tug-of-war. If you are training a puppy or a dog that pulls, avoid retractable leashes at first; AKC recommends a standard leash because it gives you more control and does not reward pulling with extra slack.

If you want to shop now, start with a 6-foot dog leash and then upgrade only if your dog’s size or behavior justifies it. The sibling pages on dog harnesses, dog crates, and dog beds cover the rest of the dog-gear stack.

If the leash hurts your grip, is too short, or invites pulling, it is the wrong leash.
