Two-factor authentication, often called 2FA or multi-factor authentication, adds a second step when you sign in. After your password, the service asks for another proof that it is really you, such as a code from an app, a text message, or a security key.
That second step matters because passwords get stolen, reused, guessed, and leaked. If a criminal has only your password, 2FA can stop them from walking into the account. It is especially worth turning on for email, banking, shopping, tax, and social media accounts.
If you have a choice, use an authenticator app or a security key instead of SMS text codes, because those options are generally stronger. The main idea is simple: make one stolen secret not enough to break in.
