What is the science behind deja vu?

Déjà vu is a clash between two brain processes that normally work together. When you encounter a new scene, your brain runs two parallel systems: a fast, automatic familiarity check and a slower, deliberate recognition process. Déjà vu happens when the fast system fires a “this is familiar” signal before the slow system confirms whether the memory is real.

This dual-processing mismatch is the strongest current hypothesis. A 2023 review in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews described déjà vu as a “conflict between a subjective evaluation of familiarity and a concurrent evaluation of novelty” — the brain senses something is familiar while simultaneously knowing it shouldn’t be.

Several factors increase the likelihood of déjà vu. Fatigue, stress, and dopamine levels all play a role. Young people experience it most often, with frequency declining after age 25. Some researchers also link it to minor, temporary disruptions in the temporal lobe — the same brain region involved in memory retrieval — which is why déjà vu can be more frequent in people with certain types of epilepsy.

Déjà vu in healthy people appears to be a normal glitch in memory processing rather than a sign of anything wrong. It’s the brain’s internal error-correction system encountering a brief timing delay, not a paranormal event or a memory from a past life.
